WORK AT HOME MOM SUCCESS STORY
Work at Home Success Story
Lisa Taliga
It was a sunny Saturday
afternoon back in 2001. I was determined to make the most of
my precious weekend and I was soaking up the sun outside my
local café.
To be perfectly honest, I’d been suffering from a severe
case of ‘Monday-it-is’, ‘Tuesday-it-is’ and
‘All-week-it-is’! I was a secretary working a 9 to 5 job –
and was feeling disenchanted with life. I was beginning to
wonder if this was what life was all about. Sometimes, I
would think about the years stretching ahead of me, and the
thought of being in the rat race until I retired wasn’t
exactly pleasant.
I picked up a newspaper to browse through, and a heading
caught my eye. It was called ‘'How to stay at home and earn
a full-time income as a Virtual Assistant.' I hadn’t heard
of the term ‘Virtual Assistant’ before, so it piqued my
interest.
So, what is a Virtual Assistant (VA) anyway? A VA works from
home doing lots of different tasks for clients, remotely.
The beauty of Virtual Assistance is the range of tasks you
can offer. I don’t know of any other field that is so
diverse!
Virtual Assistant services may include typing documents,
data entry, booking meetings, updating websites, doing
research, copywriting, editing, proofreading, Powerpoint
presentations, transcription, event organization, website
design, desktop publishing and internet marketing.
Often VAs start out offering one or two services, and then
add more, as they gain confidence and learn more skills.
Basically, if a task can be done from a distance, without
having to be in the client’s office, then you can offer it
as a VA service. The excellent
thing about Virtual Assistance is the flexibility it allows
you, not only in what services to offer, but in scheduling
your day.
It’s perfect for parents who want to stay at home and raise
their children. I’m not a parent myself, but I know plenty
of VAs who are. One very successful VA friend of mine became
a VA when she had her first child. She knew she didn’t want
to return to an office job so she took the plunge. Several
years later, she has five children, her business is
thriving, and she was able to watch her children grow up,
without the stress of going into an office every day.
Another VA colleague has a baby, with another on the way.
She works around her baby’s schedule. When the baby sleeps,
she works. She doesn’t have to be anywhere at any particular
time. She doesn’t have to check with the boss whenever she
needs time off.
It’s amazing how people perceive you when you work for
yourself. You’re able to say to your clients, I’m not able
to do that right now, but this afternoon I’ll have time, so
I’ll be able to help you then. More often than not, the
client is completely happy with that.
My equivalent of a small baby is my dog! When the sun’s
shining, I can take her out for a long walk in the daytime.
Before I worked from home, I’d have to take her out first
thing in the morning or later in the evening. In the winter,
it was often still dark! I no longer have that problem!
Anyway, back to 2001. After I decided to become a Virtual
Assistant, I did a lot of research and gradually made the
break from my office career by starting my business in my
spare time. I got my first client by advertising in the
local paper. When I had a few clients, I went part-time at
my job. Within a year, I had quit my office job and was
working full-time at home as a VA.
Today I am very happy with the decision I made and have
never looked back. I feel fulfilled and have much more self
esteem.
There is no shortage of work out there, if you know how to
go about it. There are thousands and thousands of business
owners looking for help. They cannot possibly do it all
themselves! I wasn’t surprised when I read a report saying
that Virtual Assistance is one of the fastest growing
industries on the internet. It’s certainly not too late to
jump on board and be part of this very exciting industry.
